Africa's Home For Conscious Cinema

7–10 April 2027 • Paternoster, West Coast • Die Koelkamers Teater

Wonder of Africa is Africa’s first film festival dedicated to conscious cinema: films that explore our relationship with nature, identity, belonging, healing, and the future of the planet.

We do not simply screen films. Every film is paired with an experience, a story circle on the beach, land art in the sand, an ocean immersion at dawn, a conversation that carries on long after the credits. Four days in a fishing village on the Atlantic coast.

Every film comes with an experience

We call it Cine-Culture. A screening is the beginning of the conversation, not the end of it, so every film is programmed together with a facilitated discussion, a workshop, or something you do with your hands, your feet, or the sea.

Rooted in a place, not a city

Paternoster is a working fishing village on the Atlantic coast, two hours north of Cape Town. We chose it deliberately. Film culture in South Africa is concentrated in two metros; we are building somewhere else, with the people who already live there.

Built to leave something behind

West Coast young people move from watching stories to making them, through community storytelling labs, mobile filmmaking training, and a student challenge with real credits at the end of it.

ǃKhwa: A Celebration of Water

Our inaugural edition is named for ǃKhwa, the San spirit of water and rain, held alongside Mami Wata, the water mystery known across the African continent. On this coast, water is not a subject. It is the thing everything else is arranged around, the weather, the work, the food, the fear, the beauty.

Submissions open 11 November 2026. We launch on 16 November at the Two Oceans Aquarium Ocean Campus in Cape Town, when ticket sales open [ Be there ]
