Code of Conduct

Wonder of Africa Film Festival Last updated: 17 September 2026

Wonder of Africa Film Festival is committed to providing a safe, respectful, and welcoming environment for all attendees, filmmakers, speakers, volunteers, staff, and partners (“participants”), both at our physical venues in Paternoster, Western Cape, South Africa and across our online programme. This Code of Conduct applies to all Festival spaces, including screenings, sessions, story circles, meals, social events, and our online platforms.

1. Our Expectations

We expect all participants to:

  • Treat others with respect, courtesy, and consideration, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, disability, age, nationality, or background
  • Engage thoughtfully and constructively during discussions, Q&A’s, and story circles, particularly given the sensitive themes some of our films explore (e.g., grief, identity, belonging)
  • Respect the instructions of Festival staff, facilitators, and venue personnel
  • Respect the intellectual property and creative work of filmmakers and speakers
  • Behave responsibly and considerately toward the Paternoster community and local environment

2. Unacceptable Behaviour

The following will not be tolerated at the Festival:

  • Harassment, intimidation, or discrimination of any kind, including based on race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, disability, age, or nationality
  • Verbal or physical abuse, threats, or violence
  • Unwelcome physical contact or sexual harassment
  • Disruptive behaviour during screenings or sessions
  • Recording or photographing other attendees without their consent, beyond official Festival media covered by our Photography and Filming Consent Notice
  • Unauthorised recording, reproduction, or distribution of screened films
  • Attending under the influence of substances in a manner that endangers yourself or others
  • Any conduct that is unlawful or that endangers the safety of participants

3. Reporting a Concern

If you experience or witness behaviour that breaches this Code of Conduct, please report it as soon as possible to any Wonder Of Africa Film Festival staff member on-site, or contact us using the details below. Reports will be treated seriously and with appropriate discretion.

4. Consequences

Wonder Of Africa Film Festival staff may take any action deemed appropriate in response to a breach of this Code of Conduct, including:

  • A verbal warning
  • Removal from a session, venue, or the Festival, without refund
  • Barring from future Festival editions
  • Referral to local law enforcement authorities, where the conduct is unlawful

5. Our Commitment

We are committed to responding promptly and fairly to any reported concerns, and to continuously fostering an environment where challenging and meaningful stories can be shared and discussed safely.
