Wonder of Africa Film Festival Last updated: 09 September 2026
We believe in being transparent about how we handle your personal information. This page summarises, in plain language, how Wonder of Africa Film Festival (“the Festival,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) complies with the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013 (“POPIA”). For the full legal detail, please see our Privacy Policy.
1. What Is POPIA?
POPIA is South Africa’s data protection law. It sets out how organisations must collect, use, store, and protect the personal information of individuals (“data subjects”), and what rights you have over your own information.
2. How We Apply POPIA’s Principles
POPIA sets eight conditions for lawful processing of personal information. Here’s how we apply each one:
Accountability: We take responsibility for how your personal information is handled, and our Information Officer oversees our compliance.
Processing Limitation: We only collect personal information that is necessary for a specific purpose — such as processing a ticket sale, reviewing a film submission, or sending a newsletter you’ve opted into — and only with a valid legal basis (your consent, a contract with you, or a legitimate business interest).
Purpose Specification: We tell you why we’re collecting your information at the point of collection, and we don’t use it for unrelated purposes without telling you.
Further Processing Limitation: We don’t use your information for purposes beyond what it was originally collected for, unless required or permitted by law, or with your consent.
Information Quality: We take reasonable steps to keep the personal information we hold accurate, complete, and up to date.
Openness: We’re transparent about what information we collect and why — this page, together with our Privacy Policy, is part of that commitment.
Security Safeguards: We use reasonable technical and organisational measures (such as secure hosting and restricted access) to protect your information from loss, damage, or unauthorised access.
Data Subject Participation: You have the right to know what information we hold about you, and to request that it be corrected, updated, or deleted (see below).
3. Your Rights Under POPIA
You have the right to:
- Ask us what personal information we hold about you
- Ask us to correct or update inaccurate information
- Ask us to delete your personal information, subject to any legal retention requirements
- Object to how we process your information
- Withdraw consent at any time (e.g., unsubscribing from our newsletter)
- Lodge a complaint with the Information Regulator if you’re unhappy with how we’ve handled your information
